2023 Artist Series Syrah
Tasting Notes
A concentrated, full-bodied Red Mountain Syrah showing black raspberry, blackberry, and
dark plum layered with violet, cracked pepper, olive tapenade, smoked meat, and iron-tinged
minerality. Fine, chalky tannins and lively acidity frame a long finish, with well-integrated 30%
new French oak adding cocoa, vanilla, and subtle cedar.
Winemaking
Sourced exclusively from a 0.4-acre micro-block at Red Mountain Railroad, the Syrah vines are
trained en échalas (French for on the stake) on a steep, rocky slope where all work—from
shoot thinning to harvest—is done entirely by hand, yielding small, intensely flavored berries
with a distinct mineral edge. After 100% whole cluster fermentation, the wine was matured
for 21 months in French oak (30% new), allowing the site’s concentration and savory
complexity to integrate with fine-grained structure and subtle layers of spice and cacao.
This is our inaugural Artist Series wine, dedicated exclusively to this block of Syrah. The label
features artwork by Chris Britt, an award-winning editorial cartoonist based in Tacoma.
Food Pairing
For this concentrated, savory Red Mountain Syrah, reach for rich, boldly seasoned dishes:
herb-crusted lamb chops or a peppered ribeye, smoked brisket or short ribs, and game like
venison with blackberry jus. Hard, aged cheeses such as Manchego, aged Gouda, or Pecorino
are excellent, as are bleu cheeses alongside dried figs and toasted walnuts. Serve at 60–64°F
and don’t hesitate to decant—especially with char and smoke off the grill.
